Introduction to OwnCloud#

logo

NextCloud was born in 2016 as a fork of OwnCloud. The reason is suspected to be certain cultural and value differences between several developers of the project, closer to the free software culture, and other members more focused on the business itself, and not so much on the community.

Info

The project is currently maintained by NextCloud GmbH together with a large community of users and developers who actively collaborate on it. In addition, as is the case with many other free software projects, its source code can be viewed on Github, and its development can be tracked.

NextCloud's vision is to take back control of your information while maintaining the full set of functionalities that have popularised other proprietary SaaS platforms and/or services such as Dropbox, Google Drive or Microsoft Office 365, to name a few of the most popular.

Unlike centralised SaaS platforms, what NextCloud offers us is directly the software that will allow us to build our own platform, either at the level of individual users, or also at the level of companies or institutions that wish to opt for a solution that can be controlled, managed and managed by them.

NextCloud aims to be a complete leisure and work centre. To this end, it offers multiple storage capacities, collaboration, chat, audio/video communications, calendar, contacts, and a long etcetera.

What is NextCloud?#

NextCloud is an open source software that allows us to host files in the Cloud and also allows us to view them directly from a website or apps, share them, etc.

With it, any user with an account can upload information and it will be synchronised with other users on any of their devices.

Quote

The most notable difference from OwnCloud is that NextCloud offers a modern, on-site content collaboration platform with real-time document editing, video chat and group work on mobile, desktop and web.

Greater flexibility: NextCloud has a greater number of integrations with other applications and services, meaning you can access your files more quickly and easily.

Improved collaboration: NextCloud includes enhanced collaboration tools, such as the option to leave comments on documents and view other users' recent activity. This can make it easier to work on team projects and keep up with each other's progress.

Productivity enhancements: NextCloud includes applications and add-ons that can help improve productivity, such as a shared calendar, task manager and email application.

Open source: NextCloud is an open source platform, which means that it is supported by a community of developers and users who are constantly contributing to its improvement and updating. This ensures that we will be using a cutting-edge tool and will always be at the forefront of the latest trends and technologies.
