Installing the Desktop App#

Installation on Mac OS X and Windows#
Installation on Mac OS X and Windows is the same as for any software application:
- Download the installer in the next URL
- Double-click it to launch the installation and follow the installation wizard.
After it is installed and configured the Desktop App will automatically keep itself updated
Installation on Linux#
For Ubuntu 22.04 follow the next steps:
Add (at least temporarily) a download repository. This requires registering trusted key. Run the following shell commands to trust the repository:
wget -nv https://download.owncloud.com/desktop/OwnCloud/stable/latest/linux/Ubuntu_22.04/Release.key -O - | sudo apt-key add -
Run the following shell commands to add the repository and install from there.
echo 'deb https://download.owncloud.com/desktop/OwnCloud/stable/latest/linux/Ubuntu_22.04/ /' | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/owncloud.list
sudo apt update
sudo apt install owncloud-client

Using the Desktop App#
The OwnCloud Desktop App remains in the background and is visible as an icon in the system tray (Windows, KDE), menu bar (macOS), or notification area (Linux).
Used App Icons#
The status indicator uses icons to indicate the current status of your synchronization. The green circle with the white checkmark tells you that your synchronization is current and you are connected to your OwnCloud server.
The blue icon with the white semi-circles means synchronization is in progress.
The yellow icon with the parallel lines tells you your synchronization has been paused. (Most likely by you.)
The gray icon with three white dots means your Desktop App has lost its connection with your OwnCloud server.
When you see a white circle with the letter "i" that is the informational icon, so you should click it to see what it has to tell you.
The red circle with the white "x" indicates a configuration error, such as an incorrect login or server URL.
Setting up an account#
If no account has been configured, OwnCloud Client will automatically assist you in connecting to your OwnCloud Server after the application has been started.
As a first step, specify the URL to your Server, just like you would when you open your OwnCloud instance inside a browser.
In our case the URL would be https://owncloud.iter.es or https://192.168.53.13
Next, you are prompted for your username and password. Again, use the same credentials that you would use to log on via the web interface.
In our case we will introduce our LDAP credentials of ITER.
Finally, choose the folder that OwnCloud Client is supposed to sync the contents of your OwnCloud account with. By default, this is a folder called OwnCloud, which will reside in your home directory.
After pressing Connect, OwnCloud Client will commence with the syncing process. The next screen will give you the opportunity to review your settings:
