Nextcloud backups#

Nextcloud is an excellent solution for storing and synchronizing files in the cloud, but it is not specifically designed to be used as a backup solution.

Danger

It is strongly recommended not to use Nextcloud for backups.

Reasons#

There are several reasons why it is not recommended to use Nextcloud for backup:

Not a full backup solution#

Not a full backup solution: Nextcloud is a file synchronization and storage solution, not a full backup solution. A full backup solution should include features such as automatic backup scheduling, data integrity verification, and the ability to restore files to a specific date.

Incremental backups are not possible#

Incremental backups are not possible: In Nextcloud, each time a file is saved, the previous version of the file is overwritten. This means that incremental backups cannot be made, which is essential for an effective backup solution.

Data corruption risk#

Data corruption risk: If a file is corrupted or accidentally deleted in Nextcloud, it will be deleted in all cloud instances. This means that if an error occurs in Nextcloud, all data may be lost.

Storage Limitations#

Storage Limitations: Nextcloud may be limited in the amount of storage that can be used for file storage. If used for backups, it may be difficult or costly to expand the storage needed.

Info

It is important to ensure that data is well backed up to prevent the loss of valuable information in the event of a system failure or accidental deletion.

Info

Make sure you choose a backup solution that suits your needs and has features such as automatic backup scheduling, data integrity verification and the ability to restore files to a specific date. In addition, it is always advisable to perform regular restore tests to ensure that data can be successfully recovered in the event of an emergency.

For these reasons, it is recommended to use a dedicated backup solution to adequately protect important data.
