Desktop application in NextCloud#

With this tool folders and files in your NextCloud account can be kept in sync with a folder on the user's local computer, similar to how other software tools (e.g. Dropbox) work.

Continuous synchronisation to and from the NextCloud server provides ease of use combined with extensive access control.

Installation of the desktop application#

The NextCloud client is cross-platform, it can be easily installed on Linux, Windows and macOS operating systems.

Installation on Linux#

On Linux operating systems the Nextcloud client can be installed by executing the following commands in a terminal:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nextcloud-devs/client
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install nextcloud-client

It is also possible to download the programme installer for Linux from the Nextcloud client download page: https://nextcloud.com/install/#install-clients

Once installed, it is necessary to configure the tool on the first run.

Installation on Mac OS X and Windows#

Installation on Mac OS X and Windows is the same as for any software application:

Desktop app.

  1. Download the installer at the following URL
  2. Double click on it to start the installation and follow the installation wizard.

Using the desktop application#

The NextCloud desktop application remains in the background and is visible as an icon in the system tray (Windows, KDE), in the menu bar (macOS) or in the notification area (Linux).

Application icons used#

The status indicator uses icons to indicate the current status of your synchronisation. The green circle with the white check mark indicates that your synchronisation is in progress and that you are connected to your Nextcloud server.

The blue icon with the white semicircles means that synchronisation is in progress.

The yellow icon with the parallel lines tells you that the synchronisation has been paused (most likely by you).

The grey icon with three white dots means that your desktop application has lost connection to your NextCloud server.

When you see a yellow circle with a "!" sign in it, that's the information icon, so click on it to see what it has to tell you.

The red circle with the white "x" indicates a configuration error, such as an incorrect login or server URL.

Set up an account#

The setup wizard guides you step by step through the configuration options and account setup. First, you must click on the "log in to your NextCloud" button.

Now you must enter the URL of the NextCloud server.

In our case the URL would be https://nextcloud.iter.es or https://192.168.53.13

The following screen will now appear and you will be redirected to the browser to log in with the same credentials you would use to log in via the web interface.

Finally, choose the folder with which the NextCloud client should synchronise the content of your NextCloud account.

After clicking "Connect", NextCloud Client will start the synchronisation process.

If everything went well you should see the following icon in your system icons:
